482 Surviving …Together
One of the blunders we often make is thinking that ideology or theology is what will unite humanity. There will be unity we say – when everyone thinks like I do.
For example, I used to pray for “revival.” Revival meant people flocking to churches and repenting of their sins. The result would be things like reduced crime, violence and poverty. Bars and casinos would close and people would stop cussing on the golf course.
But there was one more essential element of revival, people had to follow God according to “my” beliefs; otherwise, it wouldn’t be a true revival. Even other Christian belief systems had to morph into mine for it to be a true revival.
I wasn’t unique. Christians, Muslims, atheists, whatever, we’re all guilty of thinking that unity will only occur when everyone believes and acts according to our particular theology or worldview.
I’ve changed. I now think that humanity already is united but we can’t see it if we’re only looking for all the ways we’re different. I believe the basic challenge to survive is one element that unites all humanity. Regardless whether we think alike, all of us are interconnected and need one another.
Is it wrong to teach our own brand of beliefs? Heck no, I do it all the time. So do you. However, it is wrong when our beliefs hinder us from loving others, including those who think differently.
“This is what God does. He gives his best – the sun to warm and the rain to nourish – to everyone, regardless: the good and bad, the nice and nasty.” (Jesus speaking in Matthew 5:45.). Paul said, “You were all called to travel on the same road and in the same direction, so stay together, both outwardly and inwardly. You have one Master, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who rules over all, works through all, and is present in all” (Ephesians 4:4-6).
At one time or another, all of us are poor, blind, battered, sick and weary. In those times we need someone to act in love on our behalf. Then there are times when we are rich, joyful, healthy, content and at peace. That’s when we need to act in love toward those in need.
That’s why I challenge Clothreaders to join me at this time of the year in raising money for Camp Mak-A-Dream, a cost-free camp for children, teens and young adults with cancer. Here’s how.
I ride RATPOD (Ride Around The Pioneers in One Day), a 157 mile bicycle ride with over 9000 feet of climbing. You support me with donations for Camp Mak-A-Dream. Cancer patients and their families get a huge dose of unconditional love, regardless of their beliefs.
RATPOD’s goal this year is to raise $200,000. Please make your check payable to Camp Mak-A-Dream and sent it to me at the address below. Donations must be received by June 21st.
Jesus spent a great deal of his time explaining how to act in love. Why? Because he knew we were all interconnected and that no one would ever listen to our words unless they are driven by our love.
